LIFT UP YOUR HEARTS - A Caribbean Liturgical Celebration

Judy Bailey - Lift Up Your Hearts This is a project after my own heart - and you could say I have been working on it all my life.

I was eight years old when I joined the Holy Trinity Anglican Church choir in Barbados where I grew up. It was from an early age that I was fascinated by the depth and substance of liturgical music from „Sanctus“ and the „Gloria“ to the „Agnus Dei“ and „Our Father“.  The melodies though were more English/European than Caribbean, more distant than close, more rain and (too) little sun. After carrying the liturgical texts in my heart through all stages of my life, decades later I set about writing new melodies to my liturgy and discovering these old treasures anew...

The result is „Lift Up Your Hearts“ – 38 pieces/songs for services or choirs, for personal meditation, and to inspire you to celebrate our faith.

Liturgy live

Here is one of the songs „The Peace Of The Lord“ played live at the World Youth Day in Australia:

From the forewords...

Heinrich Bedford-Strohm, Landesbischof der Evangelisch-Lutherischen Kirche in Bayern, Deutschland "Besides the traditional liturgy which we should cultivate carefully, we need new liturgical music which can spontaneously uplift people in a special way for worship. Judy Bailey’s liturgical music does that. My wish is that her music will engage people in worship and let them experience the great power which comes from it!"

Heinrich Bedford-Strohm,

Presiding Bishop of the Lutheran Church of Bavaria, Germany

The Most Rev'd & Dr. The Hon. John W.D. Holder Erzbischof der West Indies (Karibik), Primate & Metropolitan, Bischof von Barbados "It is with pleasure that we welcome this significant addition to liturgical music. We are sure that it will add an exciting experience to worship that captures the warmth and the rhythm of Caribbean people."

The Most Rev'd & Dr. The Hon. John W.D. Holder

Anglican Archbishop of the West Indies, Primate & Metropolitan

Bishop of Barbados

The Right Reverend Nicholas Baines, Bischof von Bradford, England "Bach and Mozart did their thing. But, we need people of our generation to do our thing, too. Judy Bailey has done this. In this Eucharist, she takes the roots of her Anglican heritage and blends them with the fruit of other experiences and cultures, thus creating a musical language for the people whose language it reflects."

The Right Reverend Nicholas Baines, Anglican Bishop of Bradford, England

Most Rev. Ignatius A. Kaigama Katholischer Erzbischof von Jos, Nigeria The significance of good music in Christian worship cannot be overemphasized. After listening to the songs that Judy Bailey sent to me, it is quite clear that she and her companions are well aware that liturgical music should add life and vibrancy to worship without Liturgy losing its sense of solemnity.

Most Rev. Ignatius A. Kaigama, Catholic Archbishop of Jos, Nigeria

10. The Nicene Creed:
      We Believe In One God

We believe in one God,
      the Father, The Almighty,
      Maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is seen or unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
      the only Son of God,
      eternally begotten of the Father,

God from God, Light from Light,
       true God from true God,
       begotten not made,
one in Being with the Father.

Through Him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation
       He came down from heaven:
by the power of the Holy Spirit
He was born of the Virgin Mary,
       and became man.

For our sake He was crucified
       under Pontius Pilate;
He suffered, died and was buried.

On the third day He rose again
        in fulfilment of the Scriptures;
        He ascended into heav'n
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge
        the living and the dead,
and His Kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord, the Giver of life,
        who proceeds from the Father.
with the Father and the Son
        He is worshipped and glorified.
He has spoken through the Prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic
       and apostolic church.
We acknowledge one baptism
         for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead
and the life of the world to come.
            Amen.

      (Song version)

Lord in Your mercy hear our prayer
Lord in Your mercy hear our prayer
Lord in Your mercy hear our prayer
Lord in Your mercy hear our prayer

Ever loving Father
We call on Your name
From our hearts we´re praying
For our world today

You love more than we love
You know every need
To Your hands O Lord
We´re commending those for whom we intercede

Lord in Your mercy hear our prayer...

Turn Your face upon us
Ever gracious God
Open up the heavens
Let Your mercy fall

Give to those who suffer
Comfort in their pain
To Your love O Lord
We entrust them all and we ask once again

Lord in Your mercy hear our prayer...

* "for our world today" be varied to "for our church today", "for our land today", "for the sick today", "for who hurt today", "for our homes today", as relevant to the focus of the prayers.
